Recession-Proof Careers

Posted in Career, Business at 2:34 pm by Katia

With the impending possibility of a recession, most Americans are feeling the pain…at the pump, the grocery store, and now at work.  With rising costs and a sluggish economy, companies within several industries are required to layoff thousands of employees and unemployment rose to nearly 5% just last month.  However, there are a few occupations that remain unaffected and untouched by slow economic growth.

  • Teachers - schools all over the country are hiring teachers in order to meet population growth demands.
  • Healthcare - namely nurses and physicians’ assistants.
  • Accountants -you know the cliche…the only two certain things in life are death and taxes.  So accountant won’t be out of job anytime soon.
  • Alternative energy - as America’s dependency on foreign oil worsens, alternative energy is a booming industry despite a slow economy.
  • Truck driving jobs - Swift Transportation Company, one of the largest publicly-held trucking companies in the nation, has thousands of Swift jobs available.  Truck drivers transport nearly 75% of everything consumed in the United States, so demand for truckers remains high.

Multi-Level Marketing In The Internet Sphere

Posted in Business, money at 10:08 pm by admin

It seems that there has been a huge spike in multi-level marketing companies since the dot com boom (see Wikipedia’s MLM entry). What’s interesting about this trend is that the democratization of the internet has had a huge impact on the way that MLM’s target consumers and distributers. Where they once depended on word of mouth and personal relationships, they now rely on the mass exposure that the internet offers.

However, advances in the online sphere aren’t enough to satiate the rapidly growing MLM industry. Some companies have found a success by purchasing MLM leads from companies that specialize in finding interested individuals in niche markets.

While the MLM community is always unpredictable, one thing you can count on is that the internet will play an ever increasing role in the way they do business.

Risk

Posted in Business, living at 10:10 am by Charlene

In business class, we just went over project risk management. It is very interesting to see how it applies to life in general–rather than just business.

So with risk management, you need to assess the risk and determine how to deal with it or avoid it. But some risks are worth it because without taking risks, you won’t get anywhere in business.

This is the same with:

  • relationships
  • jobs
  • friends
  • life in general

I just find it so interesting that what makes for a good business makes for a good life.

They Picked That?

Posted in Business at 12:27 pm by Katia

The other day I was on the phone with HSBC (a bank - for those of you who don’t know) and they were playing Scissor Sisters on hold.  Random much?  I’ve also heard Def Leppard playing on hold for an attorney’s office, 50 cent (no joke) for a credit card company, and a myriad of other poor on hold choices.  It all reminds me of that Simpsons episode where Homer lost baby Maggie, so he called a hot line for missing children and they were playing “Baby Come Back” by Player on hold.  I mean, how hard can it be to obtain a decent on hold music message?  Apparently harder than one would think.

A Few Tips…

Posted in Business, finance at 11:05 am by Charlene

If you are looking to start your own business or just wanting to start selling things online, how do you decide which company to try? There are so many different choices, different companies. Here are a few tips for choosing the right dropship company for your personal needs.

  • Read the contract. This may seem simple enough, but many people don’t do it. They just sign their name to anything. Make sure that you completely understand and agree with the contract.
  • Make sure they provide the items and merchandise that you are looking to sell.
  • But be willing to take chances, safer chances at first.

The most important thing to look for in a dropship company is to find the one that perfectly matches with your preferences, needs, and financial situation. The best one that I can find is Dropship Design. Good Luck!

New Job Idea

Posted in Business at 11:26 am by Charlene

I’ve been wanting to change jobs, or at least have something else on the side. I’ve been really looking into starting an online business. I’m really leaning towards selling designer purses online. I hear that a lot of people make tons of money selling purses. So, I just might give it a try. Also, I’ve decided to use a company that specializes in wholesale dropship. It will help the business run much smoother, and less clutter on my part! All in all, it seems to be a lucrative idea.

The Lucrative Business of Freight Hauling

Posted in Business at 4:56 pm by Charlene

Business just astounds me sometimes.  I love learning about how things got started; what was the driving force behind innovations and advancements.  I just recently learned some interesting things about the trucking/freight hauler business. I first found all of this when I was looking up “Utah Transport”.

In the 1900s, trains were the mode of product transportation. Trains were efficient, effective, and could haul a great amount of product. The only problem was that trains could only deliver to centralized urban centers. From there, the product was then delivered to its final destination by horse-drawn vehicles.

A few years later, during World War II, the military needed new ways to transport supplies to the troops because the railroads were already so backed up. This is where they started experimenting with long-distance shipments using trucks with rubber tires.

By 1920, there was over a million freight trucks on the American roads. Then in 2006, there was an estimated 26 million freight trucks in the United States. Now that is a lucrative business.

Being left on hold

Posted in Business at 4:09 pm by Charlene

It always seems that it is the little things in life that drive us the craziest. At least that is my experience. I absolutely hate being put on hold. To make it even worse, most of the time it is either horrible music or complete silence. I am not sure which one is worse.

I just recently found some interesting statistics about being put on hold. CNN conducted a study and found that 60 hours of an average person’s year consists of being placed on hold. Can you believe that? That is only in one year!

I’ve always wondered why some businesses have music, complete silence, or advertisements for their customers on hold. What helps them decide which course to take? I found this question interesting so I decided to do a little more digging. A survey conducted by the North American Telecommunications Association discovered that when on hold, a caller is more likely to stay for three minutes longer if the message is a mix of music and relevant information. So, why don’t all companies do this? You would think they would want those three extra minutes, right?

While researching all of this, I came across this new idea of having a creative hold message. Finally someone has come up with a better alternative to sitting in complete silence. I think this is a great idea for companies because they can tailor the message for their needs. I figure, if I have to spend 60 hours a year on hold, it might as well be relevant and entertaining.
